Job Position – Department Manager

Currently seeking a highly motivated and skilled Department Manager to oversee operations in our garden center. The Department Manager is responsible for supervising employees and maintaining the health, quality, and organization of all plant materials and related products in the assigned department. Duties include: Customer service, vendor management, purchasing, display design, inventory control, and seasonal event leadership.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervise a team of 4 to 6 employees in daily nursery operations, including receiving, unloading, pricing, and arranging plants, pottery, and statuary.
  • Manage inventory including ordering and restocking, monitor product quality, organize creative product displays, ensure effective seasonal transition.
  • Order plant material from 15+ vendors across Virginia and surrounding states, evaluate vendor pricing, availability, and product quality to assure best value.
  • Maintain plant health through watering, pruning, fertilizing, and identifying specific care needs.
  • Deliver expert customer service in gardening, plant care, and container gardening design.
  • Provide in-depth, bilingual customer service (Spanish/English) including plant selection, garden design guidance, and troubleshooting.
  • Assist contractors needing help in translating Spanish to English.
  • Coordinate seasonal retail activities which include, but are not limited to, the Fall Market and Christmas tree and wreath sales.
  • Assign daily work tasks, ensure cleanliness and safety of department areas, verify accuracy of deliveries.
  • Assist with strategic purchasing decision and department-level budgeting.
  • Other duties assigned as needed.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Knowledge of plant material and care.
  • Mathematical skills to evaluate inventory and vendor pricing.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, stand for long periods of time on cement surface, and work in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to work Saturdays, Sundays, and overtime during peak spring, fall, and holiday seasons.
  • Ability to communicate with customers and contractors, including translating Spanish to English.
  • Two years minimum experience.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
